Arts Management Seminars

Battery Dance Company worked in conjunction with the Silesian Dance Theatre to help structure and carry out an arts management seminar as part of the International Conference/Festival for Contemporary Dance held in Bytóm, Poland. Jonathan Hollander served as a panelist and facilitator for the seminar, and met with Federal and State representatives of the Polish Government to help raise the profile of contemporary dance in Poland.

Whether in New York City, New Delhi, Helsinki, or Bombay, Battery Dance Company's arts management seminars engender opportunities for artistic collaboration and aspire to provide solutions to issues including fundraising, networking, cultural policy and international relations.

The Company recognizes that arts organizations worldwide share similar challenges related to performing, publicizing their efforts, fundraising, and functioning productively within their local environment and the global community.

By taking a leadership role in encouraging communications among arts organizations worldwide, Battery Dance Company gives artists the opportunity to share their experience and expertise among their international peers. This is particularly evident in Battery Dance Company's involvement with Indian cultural and arts organizations.

"Battery Dance Company has introduced Indian Dance to mainstream American audiences. [Jonathan] Hollander [the Company's Artistic and Executive Director] has initiated relationships with Indian dancers and musicians, and has built a body of work that bridges the gulf between a western background in classical and contemporary dance and music and the Indian sensibility. The company has teamed up with the Indo-American Arts Council to meet performers and artists from every field" writes Sunita Chowdhurie, for the Statesman Downtown, an Indian publication based in Calcutta.

Hollander also co-founded the Indo-American Arts Council (IAAC) in 1998. This New York-based nonprofit organization is an information clearinghouse and facilitator for India/US cultural relations. Its focus is to help artists and arts organizations in North America as well as facilitating artists and arts organizations from India to exhibit, perform and produce in North America.

The Battery Dance Company initiated a series of Town Meetings held with the arts community in each of India's six largest cities. Partnered with Ms. Aroon Shivdasani, Executive Director, IAAC, The Company brought awareness to the mission and programs of the Indo-American Arts Council in the Subcontinent. The IAAC's groundbreaking mission will continue to yield considerable results in Indo-American cultural relations.
