Dance in Schools Program

Program Overview

Since 1984, these individually crafted programs have served approximately 200,000 students of all ethnic backgrounds, many of whom are characterized "at-risk".

The Company's dance programs provide opportunities for the whole school population to experience the excitement and richness of live dance performance, as well as providing inspirational hands-on training, coaching and mentoring.

Students benefit from dance technique classes designed to meet the needs of general education students who may not have had prior training. The Company also offers choreography workshops in which students learn about the structure and form inherent in dance composition, and then put those concepts to use in conveying their own creative visions. Team projects encourage the honing of communication skills, trust and esprit de corps. Through lecture demonstrations, students get acquainted with the craft of choreography. Classroom visits and workshops provide further opportunities to meet with professional artists. Through Battery Dance Company's programs, students discover the fulfillment that comes from hard work and achievement in the field of dance while expressing their own voices creatively.

The Company engages in highly innovative partnerships with schools to develop programs tailored to the needs of their students. Long-term interactive arts-in-education residency projects have been implemented in many cases.

In one example of our approach to arts-in-education, the Company weaves together the literary and performing arts in an engaging context that promotes understanding of the collaborative process and creative participation on the part of students. Tools, thought processes and techniques are shared to enable students to understand how artists function in their own fields as well as interactively across the disciplines.

Our Education Program Packet provides more information regarding our fees and program modules. All programs are supervised by the Artistic Director, Jonathan Hollander, who designs programs in consultation with the school staff and makes site visits to monitor each program.
