CURRENT COMPANY RESIDENCIES
Millennium High School — Pilot Program for a Three-Year Arts Partnership,Battery Dance introduces itself to the students of Lower Manhattan's new high school with a series of master classes in dance, world music percussion, vocal music and belly dance taught by Lydia Tetzlaff, Sean Scantlebury, Yousif Sheronick, Christine Correa and Dunya (Dianne McPherson) respectively. Coming up in September, 2006, is the first of a three-year intensive arts partnership between BDC and Millennium supported through the Cultural Enhancement Fund of the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation through the U.S. HUD Community Block Grant program.
Washington Irving High School — An Ongoing Collaboration Program Sponsored by Con EdisonBattery Dance Company's partnership with Washington Irving High School has been a continuing story of success through collaboration. Highlights include the building of the school's first dance studio in the fall of 1994; the creation of a Performing Arts House in 1999; the unveiling of a newly renovated stage in 2004 through the generosity and resourcefulness of Bette Midler. Stay tuned for other developments The Washington Irving High School residency has been handled this year by BDC teaching artist Lydia Tetzlaff who created a new work, Landscape of Us, with a wonderful cast of Junior and Senior dance majors.
Frank Sinatra School of the Arts — Three-Year Arts PartnershipBattery Dance Company completed its third year as an arts partner at Frank Sinatra School for the Arts in Queens, NY, in Fall, 2005, through support from the school, Exploring the Arts Foundation, and a grant from the Center for Arts Education. The grand finale of the project was the creation of "Joyous Energies", a production featuring poetry, musical score, backdrop and costume design and choreography created by FSSA students under the mentorship of BDC's teaching artists (musicians Frank Carlberg, Christine Correa and Yousif Sheronick; designers Pat Dignan and Barry Steele; choreographer Jonathan Hollander; and dancers Jane Sato and Bafana Solomon Matea. In addition to being featured on BDC's 30th Anniversary Season performances at Tribeca PAC, "Joyous Energies" was presented at Brooklyn Polytechnic University in January, and will be presented in the Spring Dance Concert in May.
P.S. 257 -- BrooklynThrough the mentoring of Project Arts Coordinator Annette Libassi, Battery Dance's long-time arts partner at P.S. 257, a new and exciting residency was designed for 2005-2006 that even got parents into the act! Battery Dance teaching artist Sean Scantlebury led students in 2nd and 3rd grade classes through their first exposure to dance technique during a 10-week residency. Supplementing the hands-on instructional program was a visit by the students to Tribeca to see Battery Dance Company on stage at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center.
