Jonathan Hollander is one of the outstanding choreographers of his generation and has taken a leadership role in international cultural exchange and social activism. He founded Battery Dance Company in New York City in 1976 and has choreographed over 75 works that have been presented in major theaters and festivals throughout the U.S., Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and the Caribbean. In addition to his work with Battery Dance Company, he has served as guest choreographer for companies and dancers from Portugal, France, Poland, Mexico, India, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and elsewhere. He has served as artist-in-residence and master teacher in Turkey, Germany, India, Sri Lanka, Bermuda, Hungary, Poland and Finland, and at universities and conservatories in the U.S. He has established arts education residencies at the primary, middle and high school levels in New York City public schools. He served as Fulbright lecturer on dance in India in 1992, and has since toured the Indian subcontinent and neighboring Sri Lanka numerous times, performing in 20 cities and collaborating with many of the leading dancers, choreographers and musicians of both countries. Hollander has facilitated U.S. tours by many of India’s leading dance companies. Notable performances of Hollander’s works have been presented at Lincoln Center and other leading theaters across the U.S., the First Beijing International Modern Dance Festival; Taipei Arts Festival; Open Look Festival in St. Petersburg, Russia; Stockholm’s Moderna Museet; Alexander Theater and Tampere Biennale in Finland; Hyogo Performing Arts Center in Japan; Cultural Center of the Philippines; Krizanke Theater in Slovenia; National Dance Theatre in Budapest, Hungary; Varna Festival and European Cultural Month Festival in Bulgaria; national tours and television broadcasts in Poland. Hollander's work has been supported by the Educational and Cultural Affairs Bureau of the U.S. Department of State, U.S. Embassies and Public Diplomacy Offices of Regional Bureaus; National Endowment for the Arts, New York State Council on the Arts, New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, Rockefeller Brothers Fund, Ford Foundation and many others. Hollander received the Silver Mask of the Silesian Dance Theatre (Poland), the USable Award (Germany), the Arts & Business Council’s Encore Award and was a New York Post Liberty Award Nominee. Under Hollander’s leadership, Battery Dance Company actively supports the commissioning of new musical scores and the inclusion of live musical performance in its productions. Musical collaborations have paired Hollander with composers from the U.S., Finland and India. Hollander has lectured on Arts Management and Arts Education in countries as diverse as Mongolia, Poland and Taiwan; and is spearheading an effort to establish the first arts management institute in India. He is a member of the Fulbright Association and Lower Manhattan Arts Leaders and Co-founder and Board Member of the Indo-American Arts Council.
