THIS IS HOW SCHOOL SHOULD BE!”

DOWNTOWN DANCE FESTIVAL

Last year our Downtown Dance Festival expanded to nine days and three locations, and included a new collaboration with the Indo-American Arts Council as part of their Erasing Boarders Festival of Indian Dance. In 2009 we hope to keep the momentum going when we return to Chase Plaza, Battery Park and Governors Island. Press clips from the 2008 Festival are coming soon, but in the mean time have a look at some of our New York Times coverage here and here.

If you are interested in applying for the 2009 Downtown Dance Festival, please visit our application page.

2009 NEW YORK SEASON

THANK YOU to everyone who attended the performances at Tribeca Perfomring Arts Center on March 5th and 6th.

DANCING TO CONNECT: FROM GERMANY TO LOWER MANHATTAN AND BACK

High school students in Germany and the U.S. will engage in a creative project in 2009 that explores the historical theme of the Fall of the Berlin Wall, 20 years after that event changed the world. Dancing to Connect is the vehicle by which this creative process will take place in New York (at Millennium and Gramercy Arts High Schools) Washington, DC, Berlin, Cologne, Dresden, Leipzig, Potsdam and Tübingen. Battery Dance Company of New York is the producer of Dancing to Connect and has carried out earlier editions of this project in 25 high schools across Germany since 2006. Our 2009 has been jump-started through a generous grant from the US Embassy Berlin. Let us know if you can help!

ASIAN STAGES PLAY HOST TO BATTERY DANCE FOR THE THIRD YEAR

Battery danced its way through Asia this past spring, beginning in South Korea (Busan and Seoul) on April 12 and finishing up in Beijing on May 10, with exciting programs in Laos, Taiwan and Mongolia in between. Shell Games, Notebooks, I'll Take You There and the newly remounted Moonbeam were performed by Tadej Brdnik, Robin Cantrell, Bafana Matea, Carmen Nicole, Sean Scantlebury and Mayuna Shimizu, who also plied their teaching craft in schools, universities and conservatories. The tour was made possible through the generous support of the EAP and ECA Bureaus of the State Department, as well as U.S. Embassies in each country; and in China, we were hosted in the First International Modern Dance Festival by the Beijing LDTX Dance Company, National Ballet of China and our hospitality sponsor the JW Marriott Hotel!
